Being on good terms with your neighbours can come in handy when building a garden office. It is wise when you decide to buy a garden office to have a word with your neighbours and show them the plans of what you are planning to build. This quick conversation can save you a lot of time and hassle later on in the project. From our experience neighbours can get panicky that the building is going to be too tall, and overshadow their garden. Other concerns are that windows are going to overlook their garden and impinge on their privacy or whatever you are planning to use the office for is going to create noise. If you can alleviate these worries early on, you can overcome tensions before they occur.
If you have to make a Planning Permission application to build your office, your neighbours will be consulted as part of the process. Even if you don’t need to make a Planning Permission application it is wise to have this conversation before work starts on site. Worst case scenario an unhappy neighbour can delay the installation of your garden office. Work on this highly insulated garden office was delayed when a neighbour questioned the height of the building.
Neighbours can really help you out when building a garden office
While you want to preempt any problems with your neighbours, being on good terms with them and discussing your project with them can actually work in your favour. A good example of this is this 3m x 2.4m garden office by Sanctum Garden Studios. Sanctum’s customer lives in London in a terraced house with no direct access to the garden. Normally in situations like this, the only option is to walk the panels and materials for the office through the customer’s house. This isn’t ideal for the customer or the installation team. In this case, though, the neighbours came to the rescue and said that they could remove a fence panel and walk the materials through their garden.
As their customer was overseas on business the Sanctum team took down the fence panel and reinstated it once the building was completed. The Hampton Grey office that was ordered can be installed in just one day, so there was minimal disruption for the customer and their neighbour.
As you can see, it pays to be on good terms with your neighbours when building a garden office!
