Cedar cladding has become the most popular cladding material for a garden office; it creates a sleek, contemporary look. But, what if you want to create something more rustic?
Swift Garden Rooms have recently created a building which mixes contemporary design elements with a soft rustic finish.
The trees that surround the office have a preservation order on them, so careful consideration had to be given to the design of the structure and the positioning of the building in relation to the trees. The Swift team are au fait with working within the rules of tree preservation orders. They were able to create a substantial building sitting on a footprint of 7 meters x 4.5 meters. This building is 2.95 meters high, rather than the common 2.5 meters you’ll normally find flat roofed garden offices to be, so will have more headroom internally.
The waney edge larch cladding has a lot of character, the natural shape of the edges, layers up to create a finish that offers a substantial feel. Like cedar cladding, larch is a cladding that needs no ongoing maintenance. Left untreated it will weather to a beautiful silver grey. The choice of the waney edge larch is a nice touch with the building being sited amongst established trees.
The doors and windows used on this build were a special order item. A pale grey finish has been chosen which looks good today, but will come into their own as the larch cladding weathers to its silvery grey colour.
The rustic theme has been continued inside the building, with engineered rustic floorboards. The walls and ceiling though are a crisp finish, having been plastered and decorated like a room in a new build house.
The building features air conditioning for year round comfort and motorised blinds in the windows to control light and privacy. Its a nice touch that these blinds are silver coloured to tone with the pale grey door frames.
This is a great building; that clearly shows how you can mix contemporary features with rustic ones to create a building that blends with its surroundings.
