Exploring this site you will quickly find that garden offices come in all shapes and sizes, but at 8m wide this recent commission by INSITU Garden Offices is one of the widest you will see in a domestic garden.
INSITU’s customer gave them a very specific design brief. They wanted to create a large garden office building that would be self-contained from the main house with its own w.c. It needed to incorporate a good size storage area that could be accessible from both inside and outside the room. The customer wanted to create panoramic views of the established garden from within the office, and it also needed to be soundproof.
The INSITU Garden Offices team are well equipped to work with specific design briefs like this. They designed an 8.1m wide by 4.64m deep building in their signature contemporary style. The rectangular building was divided into three rooms. The largest area is to be used as a home office, a w.c. with toilet and wash basin leads off the main room. A discreet storage room sits alongside the w.c., unusually the storage room can be accessed from both within the building, and via a secret, Cedar clad door on the exterior.
The office is sited more than 40 meters away from the mains connections for water and waste, and the building site is also on a slight incline, so a pumping station needed to be incorporated into the design to serve the toilet. A small pod was installed at the rear of the building that houses a 200-litre pumping system. The INSITU Garden Offices team handled the groundworks associated in the connection of the w.c to the mains supply as part of their overall project. It is important to note that not all companies who offer to include a toilet or shower room into their buildings handle this element of the installation, rather they just install the sanitary ware and ask you to arrange the groundworks separately.
The customer wanted to ensure good views of their established garden from within the office. To able this a large 3-leaf set of sliding doors was installed on the front elevation and a smaller set of French doors on the side elevation. The doors are grey powder coated aluminium which contrast sharply with the crisp Cedar cladding.
Soundproofing was another important element on the design brief. INSITU Garden Offices use a Structural Insulated Panel’s (SIPS) core for their buildings. On top of this highly insulated core structure, they added a 50mm layer of Rockwool Stonewool acoustic insulation, an acoustic roof membrane and Stapid Silence laminated acoustic glass in the doors and windows.
Internally the office has a contemporary feel thanks to the fully plastered and decorated interior which is mixed with a 14mm thick engineered wood floor. The flooring is laid over a foil underfloor heating system for easy heat in the colder months of the year.
